Russia, Ukraine Intensify Long-Range Strikes as Civilian Toll Rises

Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range attacks in recent weeks, with Russian missile and drone strikes hitting cities and critical infrastructure across Ukraine while Kyiv has expanded its drone campaign deep inside Russian territory.The latest escalation has seen both sides carry out some of their largest aerial attacks of the war. On Sunday, Ukraine launched a major drone offensive against Moscow and several Russian regions, with Russian authorities reporting casualties and damage to infrastructure. Ukraine said some of its strikes targeted military and strategic facilities. Russia responded with another wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. Strikes hit areas including Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia, killing civilians and damaging residential and industrial infrastructure. In Kyiv, Russian attacks caused fires and damaged a prominent book market, while a major steel facility in Kryvyi Rih was also hit. The intensification of the air war comes amid a broader rise in civilian casualties. The United Nations reported that July 2026 was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since May 2022, with at least 437 people killed and 2,610 injured. Long-range missiles and drones accounted for a significant share of the casualties. Ukraine has increasingly demonstrated the ability to strike targets far beyond the front line, using domestically produced long-range drones and missiles. Kyiv has targeted Russian military infrastructure, oil facilities and other strategic sites, seeking to disrupt Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort. Russia, meanwhile, continues to rely heavily on large-scale missile and drone bombardments of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian areas, while Russia maintains that its attacks are directed at military and strategic targets. Both governments deny intentionally targeting civilians and accuse the other side of causing civilian deaths through attacks on populated areas. The latest escalation underscores how the conflict is increasingly being fought beyond the traditional battlefield, with long-range weapons allowing both sides to strike deep into each other’s territory. As attacks become more frequent and sophisticated, concerns are growing that civilian populations and critical infrastructure will continue to bear the cost of the expanding aerial war.
