FG Reaffirms Commitment To Press Freedom, Urges Action Against Misinformation
The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting press freedom while calling for stronger collective action against the spread of misinformation and disinformation across the country. The government made this position known as part of ongoing efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that a free, responsible, and professional media remains essential to Nigeria’s democratic growth and national development.
According to officials, the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognises the role of journalists and media organisations as critical partners in governance, transparency, and public accountability.
The government stated that press freedom will continue to be safeguarded in line with constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression and access to information. Authorities noted that an independent press strengthens democratic institutions by informing citizens, promoting dialogue, and holding leaders accountable. While reiterating support for media independence, the Federal Government warned about the growing threat posed by fake news, manipulated content, and unverified information circulating on digital platforms.
