Hotel Fire, Temple Stampede Kill 15 Hindu Devotees in India

At least 15 people have died in two separate tragedies in eastern India as thousands of Hindu devotees gathered to honour Lord Shiva during the holy month of Shravan.Eight people were killed when a fire swept through a hotel in Tarapith, West Bengal, where pilgrims had travelled to offer prayers on the final Monday of Shravan. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known. The victims were among worshippers drawn to Tarapith for the religious observance, which traditionally attracts large crowds during Shravan, a month dedicated to Shiva. In a separate incident in neighbouring Bihar, seven pilgrims died in a stampede at the Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district. Nineteen others were injured. According to the district magistrate, the crowd panicked after rumours spread that an electric pole had fallen on devotees inside the temple premises. The resulting surge led to the deadly crush. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and announced compensation of 400,000 rupees $4,180 for each bereaved family. The twin tragedies have once again raised concerns about safety and emergency preparedness at major religious gatherings in India, where enormous crowds can place significant pressure on venues and local infrastructure. The incidents occurred during a period when millions of Hindu worshippers participate in religious activities across the country for Shravan, making effective crowd control and safety measures particularly important.

With 15 lives lost in a single day, authorities face renewed pressure to strengthen fire safety, crowd management and emergency response systems at major pilgrimage destinations.
