Afreximbank Reaffirms Financing Support For Nigeria’s Oil And Gas Sector
Afreximbank reaffirms financing support for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector The African Export-Import Bank Afreximbank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through risk-sharing arrangements, structured financing, and refinancing mechanisms aimed at unlocking greater development of energy resources. The assurance was given during discussions with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPC Ltd, where both institutions strengthened their partnership on financing strategies designed to boost upstream oil and gas development and broader African energy integration. Afreximbank said its approach will focus on reducing investment risks for major energy projects while providing structured funding solutions that can attract additional private and institutional capital into Nigeria’s energy industry. The collaboration also aligns with ongoing efforts to expand continental energy financing frameworks, including discussions around the proposed African Energy Bank, which is expected to be headquartered in Abuja and serve as a key vehicle for funding large scale energy infrastructure across Africa. NNPC Ltd indicated that it is leading conversations around the proposed bank and expressed readiness to deepen investment partnerships that will support production growth, infrastructure expansion, and long-term energy security. Both institutions agreed on a shared agenda for African energy development and industrialisation, with plans to hold regular strategic meetings to review progress and coordinate financing initiatives. The partnership comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to increase crude oil output, improve gas infrastructure, and attract foreign investment into its energy sector amid broader economic reform efforts. Energy analysts say structured financing models such as risk-sharing facilities are increasingly important for capital intensive oil and gas projects, especially in emerging markets where investment risks remain high. The next phase of collaboration is expected to focus on refining financing structures and accelerating project funding pipelines for priority energy developments across Nigeria and other African markets.
