DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Becomes Deadliest in Country’s History

The Democratic Republic of Congo DRC is facing the deadliest Ebola outbreak in its history, with government data showing that 2,325 people have died since the current outbreak was declared in May 2026. The death toll has surpassed the 2,299 fatalities recorded during the 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak, making the latest epidemic the most devastating Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country.

Health authorities have reported 4,945 confirmed cases, putting the case-fatality rate at roughly 47 per cent. The outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment. Experimental treatments and vaccines are being evaluated as health workers race to contain transmission. The outbreak was officially declared on May 15, although genetic and epidemiological investigations suggest the virus may have been circulating for several months before it was detected. It has spread from its initial focus in Ituri Province to several other provinces. The response has been complicated by armed conflict, weak health infrastructure, misinformation and mistrust of health authorities. Movement of people between affected communities has also made contact tracing and containment more difficult. Health officials face an additional challenge because many patients seek medical help late or die at home, increasing the risk of further transmission. International health organisations have therefore called for faster detection, treatment, vaccination research and stronger community engagement. The scale and speed of the current outbreak have alarmed global health experts. The World Health Organization and other partners are supporting the Congolese government, but insecurity and funding shortages are limiting the effectiveness of the response. With more than 2,300 deaths already recorded, the crisis represents a major public-health emergency for the DRC and a serious regional concer.
