Veteran Nollywood Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57
Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family has announced. The family disclosed his death in a statement posted on the actor’s official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read. The family expressed appreciation to fans and well-wishers for their support, prayers and understanding during the difficult period, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul. Duru’s death marks the loss of one of Nollywood’s familiar faces, whose acting career spanned more than three decades. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe, which remains a notable production in Nigerian cinema. Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later moved to Nigeria to pursue his university education. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996. He began his acting career in 1989 and went on to feature in numerous Nigerian films, establishing himself as a versatile performer. Beyond acting, he also worked as a producer, director, voice-over artist and master of ceremonies. In recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry, Duru served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. He also received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in 2007. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film category at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. His death comes two years after the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024, a tragedy that attracted widespread sympathy from colleagues and fans. Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. His passing has brought sadness to Nollywood, where he will be remembered for his memorable performances and contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s film industry. Further details about his funeral arrangements had not been announced as of the time of filing this report.
