UK rescue flight for stranded Britons grounded in Oman

Muscat, Oman The first UK government-arranged repatriation flight for British nationals stranded in the Middle East failed to depart as scheduled on Wednesday night, leaving hundreds of passengers waiting at the airport for hours. The chartered aircraft, organised by the UK government to evacuate citizens amid escalating regional tensions, was due to leave Muscat International Airport and fly passengers back to Britain. However, the flight remained grounded due to technical and operational issues, officials said The UK Foreign Office confirmed that the aircraft could not depart as planned because of a technical issue, and the flight was postponed until Thursday. Passengers who had already arrived at the airport were taken back to hotels while officials worked to resolve the problem. The plane had been scheduled to take off late Wednesday evening, but the delay disrupted the evacuation effort and sparked frustration among some travellers waiting to leave the region. The repatriation flight is part of the UK government’s emergency response to growing instability in the Middle East following escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, which has led to widespread travel disruption and flight cancellations across the region. Because many commercial flights from major hubs such as the United Arab Emirates have been cancelled due to airspace restrictions, Oman has become a key departure point for people trying to leave the region. Officials say tens of thousands of British nationals are currently in affected areas of the Middle East. Around 138,000 Britons have registered with the government seeking information or assistance with evacuation. The government has said additional charter flights are planned later in the week as part of the effort to help citizens return safely to the United Kingdom. Some stranded travellers described the situation as chaotic, with long waits and uncertainty at the airport as they awaited updates about when they would finally be able to leave. Authorities say they are working to resolve the issues quickly and resume evacuation flights as soon as possible.
