Taiwo Awoniyi Receives Emotional Farewell From Nottingham Forest

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi received an emotional farewell from Nottingham Forest as he prepares to leave the Premier League club after four years. The 29-year-old Nigerian was honoured at the City Ground on Sunday, receiving a guard of honour from Forest players and staff during half-time of the club’s final pre-season friendly against French side Brest. Forest won the match 2-0.

Awoniyi was visibly moved as teammates lifted him into the air while supporters applauded and celebrated his contribution to the club. Fellow Nigerian Ola Aina was also involved in the emotional send-off.

The farewell comes as Awoniyi closes in on a reported £17 million transfer to newly promoted Coventry City. The striker had been given permission to miss the friendly so he could finalise the move.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 and played an important role during his time at the club, including helping Forest establish themselves back in the Premier League. He made more than 100 appearances for the side and scored 23 goals, according to reports.

His departure marks the end of a four-year spell that included memorable goals, injury setbacks and a strong connection with the Forest supporters. With Coventry preparing for their return to the Premier League, Awoniyi is expected to begin a new chapter of his career under manager Frank Lampard. For Forest, meanwhile, the emotional farewell provided a fitting tribute to a striker who became a popular figure at the City Ground.
