Serbia’s Student-Led Movement Demands Resignations Of Police, Intelligence And Judiciary Chiefs
Serbia’s Student-Led Movement Demands Resignations of Police, Intelligence and Judiciary Chiefs Serbia’s victorious student-led political movement has called for the resignation of senior officials in the police, intelligence services and judiciary, days after ending the rule of the former president’s political party. The demand marks a new phase in the country’s political transition, as the student-led movement seeks changes within key state institutions following its electoral victory. The movement is demanding that top figures in the police, intelligence agencies and judicial system step down, signalling its intention to pursue institutional changes beyond the removal of the previous political leadership. The calls have placed renewed attention on the independence, accountability and political influence of Serbia’s security and judicial institutions. The movement has also called for investigations into alleged corruption and misconduct under former President Aleksandar Vučić’s administration.
- Immediate dismissal of police officers accused of breaking the law.
- Resignations of senior police, intelligence and security officials.
- Changes within the judiciary to strengthen institutional independence.
- Investigations into corruption cases involving the previous administration.
- Reviews of government contracts, public spending and procurement.
- Preservation of official documents and evidence ahead of the transfer of power.
The movement emerged from student protests following the November 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people. The tragedy triggered widespread demonstrations over alleged corruption and government negligence. The Student List defeated Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party in the October 25 parliamentary election, ending its 14-year hold on power.
However, the transfer of government authority is expected to take several weeks, with the final election results still awaiting certification. Vučić has criticised the movement’s actions, while the student-backed lawmakers insist their objective is institutional accountability rather than political revenge.
