Obasanjo Flags Off ‘Lagos To The World’ Expedition In Abeokuta
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has officially flagged off the “Lagos to the World” expedition in Abeokuta, Ogun State, marking the launch of a historic solo overland journey aimed at promoting global awareness about prostate cancer and cancer advocacy. The expedition, which began at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, is being led by Nigerian adventurer and entrepreneur Pelu Awofeso Nwagwu, who plans to drive across six continents in a Nigerian-plated 2008 BMW 535i. According to organisers, the ambitious journey is designed not only as a record-setting global expedition but also as a humanitarian campaign to raise awareness about prostate cancer, encourage early detection, and support cancer advocacy initiatives worldwide. Speaking during the launch event, Obasanjo commended the initiative and described it as a bold and inspiring effort capable of projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage while advancing important health conversations around cancer prevention and treatment.The expedition founder dedicated the mission to the memory of his late mother, Prof. Helen Nwagwu, and his late sister, Mrs Onyema Fern Eseka, both of whom reportedly died from cancer related illnesses.“This mission is dedicated to my late mother and sister,” Nwagwu said, noting that the expedition seeks to honour their memories while inspiring conversations around cancer awareness and healthcare access across Africa and beyond. Organisers described the initiative as the first-ever Nigerian-led solo global circumnavigation attempt departing directly from Nigeria with a Nigerian-registered vehicle.The route is expected to take the driver through multiple countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia, with planned advocacy stops and awareness engagements in several cities around the world. Supporters of the project say the journey reflects growing interest in adventure tourism, African storytelling, and health advocacy while showcasing Nigerian resilience and innovation on an international platform.
