The victory sent Morocco into the WAFCON semi-finals for the second consecutive edition and guaranteed the hosts a place at the 2027 World Cup.
Algeria also secured their historic qualification after coming from behind to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1. The North Africans capitalised on Côte d’Ivoire being reduced to 10 players before scoring twice to complete the comeback. Both Morocco and Algeria are now among the first African nations confirmed for Brazil 2027 Cameroon completed one of the biggest shocks of the quarter-finals by defeating Nigeria 1-0. Myriam Nyadjou’s 19th-minute free-kick proved decisive as the Indomitable Lionesses held on to eliminate the 10 time African champions. Nigeria’s defeat ended their hopes of winning another WAFCON title and also denied them the automatic World Cup ticket that comes with reaching the semi-finals.
However, the Super Falcons are not completely out of the World Cup race. Malawi have also secured their place at the 2027 World Cup after reaching the WAFCON semi-finals. The achievement is particularly significant because this is Malawi’s debut appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Their remarkable run continued after they defeated Ghana in the quarter-finals, earning a place among Africa’s four automatic World Cup qualifiers. Although Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa have missed out on automatic qualification, their World Cup dreams are still alive. The four teams that lose their WAFCON quarter-finals enter a separate play-off competition for Africa’s remaining World Cup opportunities. The four quarter-final losers are Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Two of those teams will eventually advance to the FIFA intercontinental play-offs, where they will compete with teams from other confederations for the final World Cup places. FIFA’s qualification structure provides Africa with six World Cup opportunities in total four direct places and two through the intercontinental play-offs. Nigeria’s defeat to Cameroon was therefore a major setback, but not the end of their campaign.
The Super Falcons must now win their African play-off route and subsequently negotiate the intercontinental stage to secure a place in Brazil. That is a much longer route than the one Nigeria would have taken by reaching the semi-finals. The Falcons are bidding to maintain their record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
The 2027 tournament in Brazil will be the first Women’s World Cup to be staged in South America. Africa will have six opportunities to qualify, with four teams earning direct tickets through the WAFCON semi-finals and two more entering the intercontinental play-offs.
