Nigeria’s Tuberculosis Burden Worsens Amid Rising Infections, Stigma Nigeria’s tuberculosis TB crisis continues to pose a major public health and economic threat, with increasing infections, deaths and widespread stigma undermining efforts to control the disease, according to an editorial The editorial warned that inadequate funding, weak healthcare infrastructure and poor public awareness are worsening the spread of tuberculosis across the country. It stressed that despite TB being both preventable and curable, many Nigerians still face delayed diagnosis and treatment because of fear, discrimination and limited access to healthcare services. The paper called for stronger government commitment and increased investments in healthcare systems, particularly in diagnostic facilities, treatment centres and community-based awareness programmes aimed at encouraging early detection and treatment adherence. It also urged authorities and development partners to intensify campaigns against the stigmatisation of TB patients, noting that discrimination often discourages infected persons from seeking medical attention promptly, thereby increasing transmission within communities. According to recent reports, Nigeria remains one of the countries with the highest TB burden globally, ranking first in Africa and among the top countries worldwide affected by the disease. Experts have also warned that funding shortages and declining global support could further weaken the country’s TB response.The editorial further emphasised that sustained investments, stronger political will and community participation are essential to reducing infections, protecting productivity and achieving long-term success in the fight against tuberculosis in Nigeria.
