Nigeria launches Tax Ombud digital platforms to strengthen fair tax administration The Federal Government has launched new digital platforms for the Office of the Tax Ombud OTO, aimed at strengthening fairness, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s tax administration system. The platforms comprising a dedicated website, toll-free call centre, and digital case management systemare designed to give taxpayers easier access to complaint resolution services and improve trust in the country’s tax processes. The initiative was unveiled in Abuja as part of ongoing tax reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which seeks to modernise revenue administration and improve citizen engagement in fiscal governance. Officials say the new system allows individuals and businesses to file complaints, track cases in real time, and access mediation services without physical barriers or financial cost. The platforms are also intended to reduce delays in resolving tax disputes, remove bureaucratic bottlenecks, and provide a more transparent channel for addressing grievances between taxpayers and tax authorities. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, described the launch as a key milestone in efforts to build a fairer and more efficient tax system. He said the reforms are not only focused on revenue generation but also on ensuring that taxpayers are treated fairly and that disputes are handled through credible, independent mechanisms. Officials also emphasised that the Tax Ombud Office is designed to function as an impartial body that mediates conflicts between taxpayers and revenue agencies while protecting taxpayer rights.Authorities confirmed that all services provided through the digital platforms will be completely free, enabling citizens across Nigeria to seek redress without legal or financial barriers. They added that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve voluntary tax compliance by building public confidence in the fairness of the system. Government officials say the introduction of digital complaint channels reflects a shift toward a more citizen-centred tax system, where taxpayers are viewed as partners in national development rather than adversaries. The platforms are also expected to support faster dispute resolution, improve institutional accountability, and enhance data-driven tax administration.
