Nigeria Democratic Congress says extension will allow more legislative and governorship aspirants nationwide to complete the nomination process ahead of the 2027 elections. The Nigeria Democratic Congress NDChas extended the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for aspirants seeking elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the party, the deadline initially scheduled to close at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, has now been extended to 12:00 midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The extension affects aspirants contesting for State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship positions nationwide. In a statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC explained that the adjustment became necessary to accommodate more aspirants and ensure wider participation in the nomination process. “The deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and Governorship positions has been extended to 12:00 midnight on Sunday, 24th May, 2026,” the statement said. The party, however, announced that the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the office of the President has officially closed.. Under the revised timetable released by the party, screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed the forms will commence on Tuesday, May 19, and end on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The NDC further disclosed that the collection and return of nomination forms for screened and cleared aspirants will begin on Wednesday, May 20, and close on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Party officials stated that all aspirants are expected to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues nationwide with required documents, including educational certificates, voter identification cards, party membership cards, passport photographs and curriculum vitae. The party also directed aspirants to submit six copies of all required documents to the screening committee. According to the NDC, the screening process will consider factors such as competence, character, local political realities and the wishes of party members.Political analysts say the extension reflects increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties continue adjusting nomination schedules amid rising interest from aspirants across the country. Similar timetable extensions have recently been announced by other political parties, including the APC and ADC, as internal preparations intensify nationwide.
