Joseph, who was born in Nigeria and is eligible to represent England, Germany and Nigeria, has agreed to join Arsenal after choosing not to sign scholarship terms with Liverpool. The two clubs have been unable to reach an agreement over the compensation fee, leaving the matter likely to be decided by a tribunal. Joseph had progressed into Liverpool’s Under-18 setup despite his age and had been offered a scholarship by the club. However, he declined the proposal before the deadline, allowing him to discuss a move elsewhere. Several major clubs were reportedly interested in the striker, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal eventually won the race for his signature. The Gunners’ agreement with Joseph means the remaining dispute concerns how much Arsenal should pay Liverpool for the teenager’s development. Liverpool and Arsenal have held discussions over a settlement but have failed to reach common ground. A tribunal will therefore determine the appropriate compensation if the clubs cannot resolve the matter themselves. The case bears similarities to Liverpool’s recent dispute with Chelsea over Rio Ngumoha, another highly rated youngster who moved between the clubs. In that case, a tribunal ordered Liverpool to pay Chelsea an initial £2.8 million, potentially rising to £4 million through add-ons, with Chelsea also entitled to a percentage of a future sale.

Liverpool will hope the Joseph case produces a similarly substantial compensation package. Joseph is regarded as one of the promising young strikers in English academy football. His family also has strong football connections. His older brother Valentin Joseph, 18, is reportedly moving to Brighton after a prolific spell with Blackburn. Valentin is also eligible for England, Germany and Nigeria.

For Arsenal, the signing continues a strategy of recruiting some of the most promising young players available in England and Europe.
