Kwara Group Warns APC, Presidency Against Backing Saliu Mustapha for 2027 Governorship A political advocacy group in Kwara State has cautioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency against endorsing Senator Saliu Mustapha as the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election The group urged party leaders to prioritise credibility, inclusiveness, and broad political consultation in selecting a successor to lead the state after the current administration. Speaking in Ilorin, representatives of the group expressed concern over what they described as premature political endorsements allegedly emerging from influential interests within the Ilorin Emirate. According to the group, the governorship race should remain open to capable aspirants rather than being shaped by elite political preferences. They argued that Kwara requires a leader with proven administrative competence, grassroots acceptance, and a strong development agenda capable of sustaining economic and social progress. The stakeholders warned that imposing a preferred candidate could trigger internal party divisions and weaken the APC’s electoral chances ahead of the 2027 general elections. They maintained that democratic processes must be respected, stressing that party primaries should allow equal participation among aspirants. The group also appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and national leaders of the APC to remain neutral and ensure fairness in the selection process.

They emphasised that federal influence should not override internal party democracy at the state level. Observers say early political alignments are already shaping discussions within the APC as aspirants begin positioning themselves for the post-2027 leadership transition in Kwara State Political analysts note that the debate reflects widening competition among political blocs seeking influence over the state’s future leadership. With succession politics gradually gaining momentum, stakeholders expect intensified consultations, endorsements, and negotiations within party structures in the coming months. The APC leadership has yet to issue an official response to the group’s warning, while supporters of Senator Mustapha continue to promote his political credentials ahead of the anticipated race.
