‘He Can Be Your Starting Point’ Fortune Tells Chelsea to Move for Man United Flop Onana Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has urged Chelsea to consider a surprise move for goalkeeper André Onana, insisting the Cameroonian can still become an important asset for a top Premier League club. Onana remains a Manchester United player but has returned to Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign. His contract at Old Trafford runs until June 2028. Fortune believes Onana’s ability with the ball at his feet could make him an attractive option for Chelsea, particularly under new manager Xabi Alonso, whose teams are expected to build attacks from the back.

Speaking to Premier Bet, the former United player said Onana could also be an option for Newcastle United or Aston Villa.

“Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,” Fortune said. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s passing range and ability to break opposition lines from deep.

“When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference,” Fortune said Onana’s time at Manchester United has been heavily affected by costly mistakes, which eventually contributed to him falling out of favour at the club.

Fortune, however, believes the goalkeeper can rediscover his best form if he regains his confidence. “He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it,” he said. Fortune added that Onana can still be “outstanding” when playing in a system that requires the goalkeeper to contribute to building attacks.

Chelsea have spent more than £300 million on new players this summer but have yet to bring in another established first-choice goalkeeper. Robert Sánchez remains among the club’s options, while Fortune believes Onana’s distribution could give Alonso another dimension in goal. However, any immediate move for Onana would be complicated by his current loan agreement with Trabzonspor.

The goalkeeper made 33 appearances for the Turkish club last season, keeping six clean sheets, before returning to the same side for another loan spell. Fortune also praised Chelsea’s decision to add experienced players to their squad, particularly Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. He said Alonso appeared to have identified a need for more leadership within the Chelsea dressing room and had addressed it by bringing in experienced professionals. Fortune admitted, however, that he would have preferred to see Welbeck return to Manchester United. With another season in Turkey ahead of him, Onana now has an opportunity to rebuild his reputation and demonstrate that he can still perform at the highest level.

For Chelsea, meanwhile, Fortune’s recommendation presents an intriguing possibility although the goalkeeper’s current loan situation means a move to Stamford Bridge would be far from straightforward.

For now, Onana’s priority will be to regain his confidence at Trabzonspor and prove that the qualities that made him one of Europe’s highly regarded ball-playing goalkeepers have not disappeared.
