FG Set to Launch Nationwide Digital Switch Over Project

The Federal Government has announced plans to commence a nationwide Digital Switch Over DSO programme as part of efforts to fully transition Nigeria’s broadcasting system from analogue transmission to a modern digital platform. The initiative is aimed at transforming the country’s television broadcasting landscape by improving signal quality, expanding access to diverse content, and unlocking new opportunities within the media, entertainment, and digital economy sectors. The project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises digital transformation, innovation, and economic diversification. According to government officials, the Digital Switch Over will involve migrating terrestrial television signals from analogue systems to digital broadcasting technology. This transition is expected to deliver clearer picture quality, improved sound, increased channel capacity, and enhanced viewer experience across the country. The Federal Government explained that the programme will also stimulate growth in the broadcasting value chain, including local content production, signal distribution, set-top box manufacturing, and digital infrastructure development. It is also expected to create employment opportunities for professionals in the media and technology sectors.Officials noted that the rollout will be implemented in phases, beginning with selected pilot states before expanding nationwide. This phased approach is designed to ensure proper infrastructure deployment, technical testing, and smooth adoption across all regions.The National Broadcasting Commission NBC is expected to lead coordination of the project in collaboration with relevant ministries, agencies, and private sector stakeholders. These partnerships will be critical to ensuring successful implementation and sustainability of the digital transition. The government further stated that public awareness campaigns will be carried out to sensitise Nigerians on the benefits of the Digital Switch Over and guide households on how to access digital television services using appropriate receiving equipment.Provision is also being made to support vulnerable and low-income households to ensure inclusive access to digital broadcasting services and to prevent any disruption in television reception during the transition period. Stakeholders in the media and communications industry have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s broadcasting ecosystem and aligning it with global digital standards. The Digital Switch Over project is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of spectrum use, improve content delivery, and position Nigeria’s broadcasting industry for stronger competitiveness in the digital economy.
