FG: Kano–Jigawa–Katsina to Maradi Railway Project 60% Completed, Set for Delivery by End of 2027 The Federal Government has announced that the Kano Jigawa Katsina Maradi Railway Project has reached 60 percent completion, reaffirming its commitment to delivering the strategic cross-border rail line by the end of 2027. The update forms part of ongoing infrastructure efforts under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at strengthening transportation networks, boosting trade, and enhancing regional economic integration. According to government officials, construction activities along major segments of the rail corridor are advancing steadily, with civil works, track installation, and supporting infrastructure progressing simultaneously across project locations.
The Federal Government said the railway remains a priority national infrastructure initiative designed to improve mobility and facilitate seamless movement of goods and passengers between northern Nigeria and neighbouring Niger Republic. Authorities noted that the project’s current completion level demonstrates significant momentum toward meeting the scheduled delivery deadline.
The Kano Maradi rail line is expected to serve as a major economic artery linking commercial centres in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States to Maradi in Niger Republic.
Officials explained that upon completion, the railway will:
- Enhance cross-border trade and commerce,
- Reduce transportation costs,
- Improve agricultural supply chains,
- Stimulate industrial growth and job creation across northern Nigeria. The government added that the rail corridor will also help decongest road transport while improving safety and logistics efficiency The project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure development strategy under the RenewedHopeAgenda, which prioritises modern rail transportation as a catalyst for economic expansion and national integration. The Federal Government reiterated its determination to ensure timely execution, stating that adequate funding arrangements and supervision mechanisms remain in place to guarantee delivery by 2027. When completed, the Kano Jigawa–Katsina–Maradi Railway is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional trade hub in West Africa, deepen economic cooperation with neighbouring countries, and accelerate development across the northern corridor.
