Africa’s Richest Man Aliko Dangote Opens Up on Buying Arsenal

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has revealed why his long standing ambition to buy English Premier League club Arsenal never materialized, saying he chose to prioritize the completion of his multi-billion-dollar refinery project over football ownership. Dangote, a lifelong Arsenal supporter, disclosed that he seriously considered purchasing the North London club when its valuation stood at about $2 billion. However, he ultimately decided against the move in order to focus on completing the Dangote Refinery, fertilizer, and petrochemical projects in Lagos. Speaking during an interview with Nicolai Tangen, Chief Executive Officer of Norges Bank Investment Management, the Nigerian billionaire explained that he faced a difficult financial decision at the time between investing heavily in Arsenal or channeling resources into his industrial expansion projects. According to Dangote, the refinery project required massive financial commitments and became his top priority because of its long-term economic significance for Nigeria and Africa. He said he eventually concluded that allowing his business empire to suffer for the sake of owning a football club would not have been the best decision. The billionaire businessman also disclosed that Arsenal’s current market valuation has now risen significantly, making any potential takeover less attractive than it once appeared. Forbes currently ranks Arsenal among the world’s most valuable football clubs. Despite abandoning takeover plans, Dangote reaffirmed his passion for Arsenal, noting that he remains a devoted supporter of the club. He stated that he still watches Arsenal matches regularly and proudly wears the club’s jersey and scarf whenever they play. Dangote’s interest in Arsenal dates back more than a decade and became widely known around 2011 when he explored the possibility of acquiring a stake in the club. At the time, American businessman Stan Kroenke eventually strengthened his ownership position and became Arsenal’s majority shareholder. Analysts say Dangote’s decision highlights the scale and importance of the Dangote Refinery project, which has become one of Africa’s largest industrial investments and is expected to significantly impact Nigeria’s energy sector and fuel supply chain. The billionaire concluded that remaining a passionate fan of Arsenal while continuing to expand his business interests was ultimately the wiser path, adding that football ownership is no longer a priority for him.
