President Tinubu Approves Posting of Ambassadors-Designate; No Ambassador Yet for Turkey
Abuja, Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally approved the posting of three (or four, depending on source reporting) ambassadors-designate from the list of nominees confirmed by the Senate last December, a key step in replenishing Nigeria’s diplomatic corps that had faced delays. However, the ambassadorial posting for Turkey is still pending confirmation or review, the presidency said.
Tinubu’s action comes as part of efforts to boost Nigeria’s international representation and foreign policy engagement under highlighted the approval of high-level diplomatic postings after prolonged vacancies at Nigerian missions abroad.
According to government statements and multiple news reports:
Ambassador Ayodele Oke has been named Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to France. Colonel (Retd) Lateef Are / Kayode Are, a former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), will serve as ambassador-designate to the United States of America a key diplomatic partner. Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, a veteran diplomat and former ambassador to South Korea, is designated as High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.
These postings are drawn from the total of 68 ambassadorial nominees confirmed by the Senate in December 2025, which included a mix of career and non-career diplomats.
Despite an earlier report that included a nominee for Turkey, the presidency clarified that the posting for Turkey has not yet been finalised and remains under review. Officials indicated that the announcement will be made “in a matter of days,” suggesting coordination ahead of Tinubu’s planned state visit to Turkey next week. , however, reported that Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, a former governor of Kebbi State, was named ambassador-designate to Turkey in the same batch — underscoring variations in reporting as the government finalises diplomatic procedures. The presidency’s memo to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs that the governments of the receiving countries be formally notified of the new ambassadors in line with established diplomatic procedures. This step is necessary for the ambassadors-designate to take up their posts and present credentials.
The posting comes after nearly two years of diplomatic vacancies, following the recall of Nigerian ambassadors early in Tinubu’s tenure a move that had left several missions with only chargés d’affaires managing affairs. The deployment of ambassadors is seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to reengage Nigeria’s foreign missions, strengthen bilateral relations, and advance national interests on the global stage. The diplomatic fill-up aligns with his administration’s emphasis on economic diplomacy, security cooperation, and attracting foreign investment.
Analysts say that filling key ambassadorial positions especially in capitals like Washington, Paris and London could enhance dialogue on trade, security partnerships and diaspora engagement, critical issues for Nigeria’s global footprint. The possible posting to Turkey is likewise watched as the government prepares for high-level interaction during Tinubu’s visit.
