Unskilled officer with gun is danger IGP Disu warns police personnel

The Inspector-General of Police IGP, Olatunji Disu, has warned that poor training and lack of discipline among armed officers pose a serious risk to public safety. Speaking at a police passing-out ceremony in Uyo, the IGP stressed that professionalism and discipline are essential in policing, noting that the Nigeria Police Force must move away from misconduct and abuse of power.

He emphasised that The statement was delivered during the graduation of 1,068 retrained constables, where the IGP highlighted that the exercise was part of broader efforts to improve policing standards.

He explained that

• The era of police impunity is over
• Officers must use firearms only as a last resort and within the law
• Misuse of weapons will attract dismissal and prosecution

IGP Disu reiterated that officers who abuse their power will face strict consequences, stressing that professionalism, not force, defines modern policing.

He warned against

• Extortion and corruption
• Reckless use of firearms
• Misconduct while on duty

The police leadership said the ongoing retraining and restructuring aim to restore public trust and strengthen community policing across Nigeria. Authorities also urged citizens to cooperate with police and report misconduct through official channels. The IGP’s message reinforces a key reform direction: better-trained officers are essential for public safety, while poorly trained armed personnel pose a major threat to society.
