Premier League Hands Chelsea One-Year Suspended Transfer Ban Over Financia rule Breaches
The Premier League has handed Chelsea FC a one-year transfer ban suspended for two years after the club was found guilty of breaching financial and regulatory rules involving undisclosed payments during the Roman Abramovich era. The sanction follows an extensive investigation into financial activities between 2011 and 2018, during which undisclosed payments were made to players, agents, and third parties but were not properly reported to football authorities. In addition to the suspended transfer ban, Chelsea were fined a record £10.75 million the highest penalty ever issued by the Premier League.
The club has also been hit with an immediate nine-month ban on registering academy players, alongside further financial penalties linked to breaches of youth development regulations between 2019 and 2022. According to league findings, the payments estimated at over £47 million were made through third-party entities connected to the club and were omitted from official financial submissions, violating transparency and reporting rules.
However, Chelsea avoided harsher punishments such as a points deduction due to their voluntary disclosure of the irregularities in 2022 and full cooperation with investigators after new ownership took over. The Premier League confirmed that the one-year transfer ban will only take effect if Chelsea commits further similar violations within the next two years. While the sanctions mark a significant disciplinary action, Chelsea’s cooperation helped limit the severity of the punishment, allowing the club to continue normal first-team transfer activities unless further breaches occur.
