His comments come after Donald Trump, the US president, said Iran wanted to reach a deal to end the conflict but that the proposed terms were “not good enough.” Araghchi said Tehran had not asked for a ceasefire or negotiations, contradicting suggestions from Washington that talks could soon take place. “We have never asked for a ceasefire,” he said, adding that Iran was prepared to continue its response for as long as necessary. Iranian officials have repeatedly argued that the conflict began after attacks by Israel and its allies, and they say Iran is acting in self-defence. President Trump said in an interview on Saturday that Iran appeared interested in making a deal to end the war.
