Liberia has become one of several countries agreeing to receive migrants deported from the United States under President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement programme. The first group of 20 deportees arrived in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, on Thursday, marking the beginning of an agreement under which Liberia could accept up to 1,200 migrants from third countries over the next 12 months. The development has particular significance for Liberia because of the country’s own history of migration from the United States. Liberia was established in the 19th century by formerly enslaved and free Black people from the US and became closely connected to American settlement and influence. The latest deportation arrangement therefore places Liberia at the centre of a striking historical reversal: a country whose modern history is deeply connected to migration from the United States is now receiving migrants being removed from the US. The agreement comes as the Trump administration continues to expand its deportation programme and pursue arrangements with countries willing to accept migrants who cannot be returned directly to their countries of origin.
