What is “looksmaxxing” and why are young men talking about it

A growing number of young men are getting involved in a trend known as “looksmaxxing” – an online movement focused on trying to maximise physical attractiveness. The term combines “looks” and “maximising”, meaning efforts to improve appearance as much as possible. It has become popular on social media platforms such as TikTok and in online forums.

Looksmaxxing refers to a range of practices aimed at making someone look more attractive. These can include basic lifestyle changes such as:

  • Skincare routines
  • Exercise and dieting
  • Haircuts and grooming
  • Fashion changes

These are often called “softmaxxing”, which focuses on ordinary self-improvement. But in some communities, the trend can also involve more extreme measures sometimes called “hardmaxxing including cosmetic surgery, fillers, steroid use or other risky procedures intended to change facial structure or body shape. The concept originated in the 2010s on internet forums linked to the “incel” subculture, where some men believed that physical appearance determined dating success.

In the early 2020s, the idea moved into mainstream social media, especially TikTok, where creators began sharing “glow-up” advice and tips for improving appearance While some supporters say looksmaxxing encourages men to take care of themselves, experts warn the trend can have harmful effects.

  • Body dysmorphia (obsession with perceived flaws)
  • Anxiety and low self-esteem
  • Unrealistic beauty standards for men

Some online communities also rate people’s attractiveness and harshly criticise appearance, which critics say can damage young men’s confidence and mental health. Experts say the trend reflects wider pressures on young men from social media beauty standards, influencer culture and online dating, where appearance is often emphasised.

As a result, what began as a niche internet idea has become a global conversation about male body image, confidence and the influence of online culture.
