The United States government says it has received “credible reports” suggesting that the Palestinian militant group Hamas is planning an “imminent attack on civilians in Gaza,” warning that such an assault would constitute a “direct and grave violation” of the ongoing ceasefire agreement brokered by Washington earlier this year.

According to a statement released by the US State Department, any planned attack against Palestinians would “undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts.”

“Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire,” the statement read.

The department did not provide additional details about the nature of the alleged attack, or clarify how such action would specifically breach the terms of the US-brokered truce between Hamas and Israel.

Hamas Denies Allegations

Hamas has strongly denied the US claim, calling it “false and politically motivated.” In a counter-statement, the group accused Israel of arming and supporting rival armed factions inside Gaza, which it said have been trying to destabilize its control since Israel’s partial withdrawal earlier this year.

“Our police forces in Gaza, with broad popular and community support, are fulfilling their national duty in pursuing these gangs and holding them accountable,” Hamas said in its response.

Local sources confirmed that Hamas has recalled about 7,000 members of its internal security forces to restore order and re-establish control following weeks of violent clashes.

Power Struggle and Clashes

Last week, BBC Verify authenticated disturbing videos showing public executions carried out by Hamas gunmen in Gaza. The footage coincided with one of the bloodiest internal confrontations in years — a clash between Hamas security units and armed members of the Dughmush family, leaving 27 people dead in Gaza City.

Observers describe the situation as a “power vacuum” in parts of Gaza not directly controlled by Hamas, particularly following Israel’s Phase 1 withdrawal under the Trump-brokered ceasefire, which currently leaves the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) occupying just over 50% of the Gaza Strip — up to what has been dubbed the “Yellow Line.”

The Ceasefire Agreement

Under the 20-point Trump ceasefire plan, Hamas agreed to relinquish its heavy weapons and halt all cross-border or internal attacks, effectively ending its armed threat to Israel. In return, Israel committed to a phased pull-back and limited reopening of humanitarian corridors under international supervision.

Clause 12 of the agreement states that “Hamas and all factions in New Gaza must pose no threat to their neighbours or their people.”
Regional guarantors — Egypt, Qatar and Turkey — were notified of the US warning and urged to ensure full compliance with the truce terms, according to the State Department.

Trump’s Warning

Former US President Donald Trump, the principal broker of the ceasefire, reiterated earlier this week that Hamas must halt all violence.

“If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He later clarified that he did not intend to send US troops into Gaza, saying Washington would instead employ “other measures” to enforce the agreement.

Rising Tensions in Gaza

Reports from humanitarian groups indicate that several Gazan gangs — some accused of looting aid convoys — are currently active in the eastern zones of Gaza still under partial Israeli control. Residents say these groups operate “with near impunity,” raising fears of renewed instability even as ceasefire monitors attempt to maintain calm.

Analysts warn that any verified attack by Hamas or other factions would risk collapsing the fragile ceasefire, potentially reigniting full-scale hostilities between Israel and Palestinian forces in Gaza.
