US State Department apologises over mislabelled Africa map
The United States Department of State has apologised after displaying a map of Africa that incorrectly labelled every highlighted country during an international AIDS conference in Rio de Janeiro, describing the incident as “an unfortunate error” caused by last-minute changes to a presentation. The flawed map was presented during a session at the AIDS 2026 conference on U.S. government health assistance programmes in Africa. It highlighted six countries Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi and Cameroon but each was either incorrectly positioned or misidentified. Nigeria, for instance, was shown as a landlocked country in the Sahara Desert, while Mozambique was placed in the Horn of Africa and Côte d’Ivoire appeared on the eastern side of the continent.
Responding to criticism that followed the presentation, a State Department spokesperson acknowledged the mistake, saying it resulted from a team member who hastily altered the slide deck shortly before the event. The department said it accepted full responsibility for the confusion caused to conference participants, including African partners. The map drew widespread attention after attendees shared images of the presentation on social media, prompting criticism from public health experts and observers who questioned how such significant geographical errors escaped review before being shown at a high-profile international conference. According to reports, the map bore an artificial intelligence watermark indicating it had been produced using OpenAI tools before being modified for the presentation. The incident has renewed discussions about the need for human oversight when using AI-generated content in official government communications. Despite the controversy, the State Department said the conference discussions remained productive and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting global HIV/AIDS programmes through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief PEPFAR.
