US Navy Destroyer Lost Power for Four Days in South China Sea

A US Navy guided-missile destroyer spent four days without power while operating in the South China Sea last month after an engineering failure affected its generators. The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, suffered the failure on July 24, leaving the warship without functioning toilets, galley services and air conditioning. Potable water supplies were also affected, according to the US Navy’s 7th Fleet. The blackout occurred while the ship was operating in the hot and humid South China Sea, creating difficult conditions for its crew. The loss of power also left the vessel unable to manoeuvre independently for a period. Other ships from the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group provided assistance. The guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls supplied meals to the crew, while contractor tugboats eventually towed the Benfold to Subic Bay in the Philippines for repairs. Power was restored on July 30, while repairs were completed in early August. The Navy said no crew members were injured and praised the sailors for their professionalism and resilience during the incident. The cause of the generator failure remains under investigation. The incident is also drawing attention because it represents another recent power-related problem involving a US Navy destroyer in the Indo-Pacific.

The episode highlights the demanding conditions faced by naval crews operating for extended periods in strategically important waters, where mechanical failures can quickly affect not only a ship’s combat readiness but also basic living conditions for personnel on board.
