The initiative, officially described as the “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” forms part of an agreement tied to Trump’s decision to withdraw a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service IRS. The lawsuit accused the IRS of failing to prevent the leak of Trump’s tax returns by former contractor Charles Littlejohn. According to the Justice Department, the fund will distribute compensation and formal apologies to people who claim they were victims of what the administration described as “weaponization and lawfare.” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the programme would create “a lawful process” for people seeking redress. The fund is expected to be overseen by a five-member commission, with most commissioners appointed by the attorney general. Reports indicate that recipients could include Trump associates investigated in connection with the Russia inquiry and some individuals prosecuted over the January 6 Capitol riot.Critics, including Democratic lawmakers and ethics watchdog groups, have condemned the move as politically motivated and potentially unconstitutional.
