UN Warns 309 Million Africans Are Hungry as Conflict and Climate Risks Threaten Food Security A new United Nations report has revealed that an estimated 309 million people in Africa are currently facing hunger, despite a third consecutive year of global progress in reducing food insecurity. The report also found that nearly 67 per cent of Africans cannot afford a healthy diet, highlighting the continued challenges facing households across the continent amid rising food costs, poverty and economic pressures. The UN warned that ongoing conflicts, climate-related shocks and declining humanitarian funding could worsen the situation, potentially leaving as many as 520 million people worldwide facing hunger by 2030 if urgent measures are not implemented. According to the report, vulnerable communities are being affected by multiple overlapping crises, including armed conflicts, extreme weather events, displacement and economic instability. These factors are disrupting agricultural production, limiting access to food and increasing dependence on humanitarian assistance. Food security experts have called for greater investment in agriculture, climate adaptation, social protection programmes and sustainable food systems to address the root causes of hunger. The UN stressed that reducing hunger in Africa will require stronger cooperation among governments, international organisations, development partners and local communities.While global hunger levels have shown some improvement, the report noted that progress remains uneven, with Africa continuing to face some of the most severe food insecurity challenges. The organisation urged governments and partners to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable populations and build resilient food systems capable of withstanding future crises.
