Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada At Least Ten People Are Confirmed Dead
Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada At least ten people are confirmed dead and dozens injured following a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and an associated residence in northeastern British Columbia, authorities said
The tragedy, one of Canada’s deadliest mass shootings in decades, has shocked the tight-knit community of about 2,400 residents.
The shooting unfolded shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time (PST) on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, when police received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.Six people were found dead inside the school by responding officers. A seventh victim died en route to hospital. Two additional victims were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the attack. The suspected shooter was also found dead, apparently from a self inflicted wound, and authorities say no other suspects are believed to be involve
This brings the total confirmed deaths to ten, including the suspected gunman. At least 27 people were injured, including two with serious or life-threatening wounds, and the rest with less severe injuries. Two of the critically wounded were airlifted for urgent medical care Authorities quickly evacuated remaining students and staff, and a shelter-in-place alert was issued for the wider community before later being lifted as the situation came under control. Police have identified the suspected shooter but have not released any names pending notification of next of kin.
Initial paramedics and RCMP reports describe the suspect as female, and an emergency alert sent to residents described a brown-haired woman wearing a dress, but officials have refrained from confirming any further details. Motive remains unclear, and investigators are working to determine how the victims were connected to the shooter. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed profound sorrow, stating he was “devastated” and would postpone planned travel in response to the tragedy. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the event “an unimaginable tragedy” and pledged support for the stricken community. Local officials emphasized the difficulty of the loss in a small town where many residents knew one another personally.School shootings are extremely rare in Canada, especially on this scale. The last incident of comparable magnitude was the Nova Scotia rampage of 2020, which also resulted in significant loss of life. The attack has sparked renewed discussion on gun violence, public safety, and support for trauma-affected communities in a country that has historically lower rates of mass shootings compared with some other nations. The high school and local elementary school will remain closed for the week while counseling and support services are made available.
Investigations remain active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to assist law enforcement.
