Tinubu Vows to Fix Nigeria’s Refineries, Says Responsibility Is Now His

President Bola Tinubu has vowed to address the long-standing challenges confronting Nigeria’s refineries, saying the responsibility for fixing the country’s inherited problems now rests with his administration. Tinubu made the pledge on Thursday when he received the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers NUPENG, led by its National President, Salimon Akanni Oladiti, at the State House in Abuja

The President said the Federal Government would adopt an evidence-based approach to resolving the problems affecting the nation’s refineries. According to Tinubu, this would involve detailed research, technical assessments, restructuring and improved management as the government works to make the facilities more effective. Tinubu acknowledged that many of the challenges predated his administration but said he would not use that history as an excuse for inaction. He said he had accepted both the assets and liabilities inherited from previous governments and was therefore taking responsibility for finding solutions. The pledge comes amid continuing efforts to improve the performance of Nigeria’s domestic refining industry and reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products. The government has been pursuing reforms aimed at improving the management and operational efficiency of existing refineries, while also encouraging greater investment in domestic refining capacity. For oil workers and other stakeholders in the petroleum sector, the latest commitment signals a renewed emphasis on technical assessments and restructuring rather than relying solely on previous approaches to refinery rehabilitation.

Tinubu said the ultimate objective was to ensure that Nigeria’s assets work for the benefit of its citizens.
