Tinubu to address National Assembly on June 12 during Democracy Day celebration President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, according to official preparations for the national commemoration.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee IMC tasked with organising the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations, held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, George Akume, who inaugurated the committee, said the President’s address to lawmakers would be one of the major highlights of this year’s celebration. Akume explained that Democracy Day remains a significant national occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, particularly the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists during the struggle that culminated in the restoration of civilian rule. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 presidential election struggle, especially the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, widely regarded as the symbol of Nigeria’s democratic movement. According to the SGF, the 27th Democracy Day anniversary will also provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, improving governance, and promoting national development despite current socio-economic challenges.
He urged members of the organising committee to ensure timely preparation, noting that activities leading to the celebration are expected to be concluded within days before June 12.
The Federal Government has also outlined a series of programmes for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, including
- World press conference on June 4
- Special Juma’at prayers on June 5
- Interdenominational church service on June 7
- Public lecture on June 9
