Tinubu Tasks Homeland Security Adviser With Five-Year National Security Threat Assessment President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to coordinate the development of a comprehensive five-year National Security Threat Assessment and Defence Plan aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to anticipate and respond to emerging security challenges. The directive was issued as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and improve coordination among the country’s security and defence institutions. The proposed assessment is expected to provide a long-term framework for identifying major threats to national security, assessing Nigeria’s preparedness and outlining strategic measures required to protect the country. The plan is also expected to strengthen cooperation among the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, police and other security institutions, while improving intelligence gathering, early-warning systems and operational coordination. The President’s directive comes amid continuing security challenges across several parts of Nigeria, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and other threats to lives and property. A five-year strategic assessment would allow the government to move beyond short-term responses and develop a more coordinated approach to national defence and internal security. The National Security Adviser is expected to work with relevant government institutions and security agencies in preparing the assessment and defence plan. The initiative is also aimed at ensuring that Nigeria’s security priorities are aligned with available resources, emerging technologies and changing threats within the country and across the wider West African region.
