In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended sympathy to the bereaved family, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission (NSC), professional colleagues, and football fans nationwide.

President Tinubu commended the late Modakeke high chief for his lifelong commitment to the development of grassroots football in Nigeria and his vital role in strengthening football administration structures across the country.

He highlighted Onigbinde’s historic influence as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles, a milestone that reshaped national team leadership and inspired generations of Nigerian coaches and players. The President acknowledged Onigbinde’s leadership of the Super Eagles to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, noting that this achievement underlined his tactical foresight and passion for the game. Tinubu said the accomplished football manager will be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and unwavering passion for the round‑leather game, attributes that left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s football landscape. In his tribute, the President prayed for the peaceful repose of Onigbinde’s soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, and associates the strength to bear the loss of the respected sports icon.
