The Patriots Warn of Rising Insecurity, Poverty Ahead of 2027 Elections Elder statesmen under the umbrella of The Patriots have raised fresh concerns over worsening insecurity, deepening poverty, and governance failures in Nigeria, warning that escalating violence across the country could severely threaten food security and national stability ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, made the remarks during a media briefing in Abuja, where they called on the Federal Government to urgently adopt stronger measures to address the country’s security and economic crises. According to The Patriots, persistent attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and armed groups in several parts of Nigeria have continued to displace communities and prevent many farmers from returning to their farmlands.

Anyaoku stated that the increasing number of internally displaced persons IDPs and abandoned farmlands could worsen hunger and food shortages if urgent intervention is not implemented before the next election cycle. The Patriots urged the Federal Government to treat insecurity as a “national protection, governance and economic survival crisis.”

They warned that continuing insecurity could destabilize economic recovery efforts and intensify public frustration ahead of the 2027 elections.While acknowledging some recent economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government, The Patriots argued that living conditions for millions of Nigerians remain extremely difficult. The group referenced National Bureau of Statistics data indicating that approximately 63 per cent of Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, particularly in rural communities heavily affected by insecurity and unemployment.They said worsening inflation, unemployment, and declining purchasing power continue to increase hardship nationwide. The Patriots also renewed their longstanding demand for constitutional restructuring and governance reforms, arguing that Nigeria’s current political system has failed to adequately address national challenges.
