Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the United Kingdom, with early diagnosis playing a critical role in improving treatment outcomes. Health experts note that while routine screening has helped reduce mortality, expanding access to women identified as being at increased risk could further enhance the programme’s effectiveness. The researchers have called for a review of the NHS screening strategy to ensure that more high-risk women under 50 are identified before symptoms develop. They emphasised that improving risk assessment, rather than simply lowering the screening age for everyone, could make breast cancer screening more targeted and effective.
