Relief As Lagos Opens Agric-Isawo AFA Bridge Section To Traffic

Residents and commuters along the Agric-Isawo axis of Ikorodu, Lagos State, are experiencing relief after the Lagos State Government opened the inbound section of the AFA Bridge to traffic, ending years of difficult crossings and disruption caused by flooding. The newly opened section of the bridge provides motorists with a safer route across the flood-prone area, allowing commuters to avoid the low-lying floodplain that had frequently become difficult or impossible to navigate during periods of heavy rainfall. The opening followed an inspection of ongoing road and bridge projects across Ikorodu and Kosofe by the Lagos State Government’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Office of Infrastructure, Olutokunbo Oyenuga, and other officials. Daramola confirmed that the inbound section of the AFA Bridge on Agric-Isawo Road had been opened for use, describing the development as a major step forward for commuters who had endured challenging conditions in the area. He, however, noted that construction work was still ongoing on the outbound carriageway of the bridge. The infrastructure intervention is particularly significant for residents who previously had to contend with severe flooding around the old crossing. During periods of heavy rainfall, the area had become difficult for both pedestrians and motorists, with residents sometimes forced to use temporary walkways to cross. Residents and community leaders have welcomed the development, describing the opening as a long-awaited relief after years of inconvenience. The General Secretary of the CDC Ikorodu West LCDA Road Committee, Abiodun Sunday, said residents had endured considerable hardship before the opening, particularly because of flooding and difficult access to the bridge. The Baale of Itowolo, Sikiru Aregbeshola, also commended the government for interventions around the area, while residents expressed hope that the completion of the remaining section would further improve transportation and connectivity. The Lagos State Government has urged motorists to exercise caution around the bridge because construction activities are still ongoing. Drivers have also been advised to observe speed limits, follow temporary traffic management measures and avoid reckless driving. Authorities further warned motorists against using unauthorised bus stops or loading points around the bridge, while pedestrians have been advised to use designated walkways and keep away from construction areas. The development forms part of wider road and bridge works being undertaken by the Lagos State Government to improve connectivity and ease transportation challenges in communities across Ikorodu and other parts of the state. The government has also appealed to residents to protect the newly provided infrastructure and ensure that public roads and bridges are properly maintained for the benefit of the wider community. For residents of the Agric-Isawo axis, however, the opening of the inbound section represents an important change after years of navigating flooded roads and difficult crossings.
