President Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation as Inspector-General of Police, Appoints Tunji Disu in Acting Capacity President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr Kayode Egbetokun and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as the Acting IGP of the Nigeria Police Force with immediate effect.
Egbetokun submitted his letter of resignation citing pressing family considerations, which President Tinubu officially accepted on Tuesday, 24 February 2026. Egbetokun had been appointed in June 2023 to a four-year term that was due to conclude in June 2027 under the amended Police Act. In his formal acceptance, President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service, acknowledging his dedication, professionalism and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
In view of ongoing security challenges in the country, Tinubu approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, a role he assumes immediately to lead the Nigeria Police Force. The president said he is confident that Disu’s experience, operational depth and demonstrated leadership capacity will help provide steady and focused direction at this critical time.
Disu hails from a long career in policing, including leadership roles in operational, intelligence and community-oriented units. His elevation underscores the administration’s focus on strengthening security institutions as part of its broader national agenda. In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu said he will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Upon approval, his nomination will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation as head of the Force.
The presidential statement reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
