Powerball to expand to UK, opening lottery to millions more players

The popular American lottery game Powerball is set to expand internationally for the first time, allowing players in England, Scotland and other parts of the United Kingdom to participate from this summer. The move marks a major development for the game, which has created numerous millionaires across the United States and is known for offering some of the largest jackpots in the world. The expansion follows an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs Powerball, and Allwyn UK, the operator of the UK’s National Lottery. If approved by regulators, it will be the first time a lottery outside the United States contributes to the Powerball jackpot pool. Players in the UK will be able to take part in the same jackpot draws as US players, with identical winning numbers shared across both regions. However, there will be some differences in how prizes are structured. While US winners can choose between a lump sum or annuity payments, UK winners are expected to receive their jackpot winnings in instalments over a 30-year period.

Ticket prices and some lower-tier prize structures may also vary between the two markets. Lottery officials say the inclusion of UK players will significantly increase the number of participants, allowing jackpots to grow faster and reach even higher values. Powerball is already famous for record-breaking prizes, including a jackpot exceeding $2 billion—the largest lottery prize ever recorded.

Despite the expansion, officials say there will be no changes to how the game operates in the United States. Draws will continue to be held three times a week, and ticket prices and odds will remain the same for American players. The rollout in the UK is still subject to approval by the country’s Gambling Commission. If approved, tickets are expected to go on sale later this summer. Launched in 1992, Powerball is one of the most widely played lottery games in the United States, operating across dozens of states and territories. The planned expansion reflects a broader effort to grow the game globally, increase prize pools, and attract new players with the promise of life-changing jackpots.
