Osun Victory Boosts Confidence in Ballot, APM Predicts Tinubu’s 2027 Defeat The re-election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has renewed confidence in the power of the ballot, with the Allied People’s Movement APM predicting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could suffer defeat in the 2027 presidential election.
Adeleke was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election after securing 511,067 votes across 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, defeating the All Progressives Congress APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, by 66,252 votes. The result has been described as a significant political signal ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly because the APC had regarded the Osun contest as an important test of its electoral strength. Adeleke’s victory came despite political divisions and the incumbent’s decision to contest under the Accord platform. The APM, through its National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar, said the outcome demonstrated that no political establishment is unbeatable when voters are determined to exercise their democratic power. The party interpreted Adeleke’s victory as evidence of growing dissatisfaction with the APC and a possible indication of what could happen in 2027.
With about 43.2 per cent voter participation, INEC recorded 1,010,684 accredited voters out of 2,339,544 registered voters. A total of 1,005,800 votes were cast, including 985,079 valid votes and 20,721 rejected ballots. The political significance of the result extends beyond Osun. The Peoples Democratic Party PDP described Adeleke’s victory as an “advance payment” against the APC, while President Tinubu congratulated Adeleke and urged him to unite the people of Osun and accelerate development in the state.
Adeleke’s victory therefore sets the stage for an increasingly competitive political environment ahead of 2027, with opposition parties likely to draw lessons from Osun as they mobilise voters and challenge the APC’s hold on national power.
