Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers Condemn Alleged Call for His Killing on National Television The legal team representing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has condemned comments allegedly made by Mr Chigozie Nnabugwu calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to kill their client, describing the remarks as a dangerous endorsement of extrajudicial action.

In a statement issued by Kanu’s lawyers, the team said the comments made during a national television appearance were unacceptable and amounted to a call for the government to violate Kanu’s constitutional right to life and due process.The lawyers argued that disagreements over Kanu’s political activities or the activities of IPOB cannot justify bypassing the courts or carrying out any action outside the law. They stressed that Kanu remains a defendant before the court and should only be dealt with through lawful judicial procedures. The legal team called on relevant authorities, including security agencies and regulatory bodies, to investigate the alleged remarks and take appropriate action to prevent what they described as incitement to violence.

Kanu, who leads IPOB, is currently facing charges brought by the Nigerian government relating to allegations including terrorism and incitement. He has denied the allegations and has maintained that his actions are tied to his campaign for the self-determination of the Southeast region. The lawyers said public figures and commentators have a responsibility to avoid statements that could inflame tensions, particularly in a region that has experienced years of security challenges. The controversy comes amid continued debate over the government’s handling of the security situation in the Southeast and calls from different groups for political and legal solutions to address ongoing unrest. Authorities have not announced any action against Nnabugwu over the comments at the time of reporting.
