Nigeria Strengthens Defence Cooperation With China
Nigeria and China have moved to deepen defence cooperation as both countries seek to strengthen security collaboration, enhance military capacity and improve strategic ties. The renewed partnership focuses on areas including defence training, military exchanges, technology cooperation and support for Nigeria’s efforts to address emerging security challenges. Nigerian and Chinese officials said the cooperation reflects the growing relationship between both countries and their shared interest in promoting peace, stability and regional security. The collaboration is expected to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional development for military personnel and expanded engagement between defence institutions in both countries. Nigeria has continued to pursue international partnerships aimed at improving its security capabilities as it confronts threats including terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other forms of violent crime. China, one of Nigeria’s major economic partners, has maintained diplomatic and security engagements with several African countries through bilateral agreements and strategic cooperation initiatives. Security experts say stronger defence partnerships can support Nigeria’s efforts to modernise its armed forces, provided such agreements are implemented with transparency and aligned with national security priorities.
The latest development underscores the expanding relationship between Abuja and Beijing, with defence cooperation becoming an increasingly important part of their broader bilateral ties.
