Nigeria Advances Responsible AI Use in Education
Nigeria is stepping up efforts to promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence in education, as the country seeks to harness emerging technologies while protecting students, teachers and the integrity of the learning process. The growing adoption of artificial intelligence is transforming education globally, creating new opportunities for personalised learning, lesson planning, research and administrative support. Nigeria is increasingly looking to ensure that these benefits are achieved without compromising academic integrity, data privacy or human oversight. Recent initiatives have highlighted the need for teachers, school administrators and education policymakers to understand both the opportunities and risks associated with generative AI. A 2025 guide on the responsible use of generative AI in Nigerian schools stressed that AI should support rather than replace teachers and learners. It also identified concerns including unequal access to technology, misinformation, academic dishonesty, privacy risks and the need for tools to reflect Nigeria’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The guidance recommends that schools establish clear rules governing when and how students can use AI. It also encourages teachers to design assignments that require original thinking and enable students to demonstrate their understanding rather than simply submitting AI-generated answers. Data protection is another major consideration. Schools and education authorities are being encouraged to ensure that AI systems handling students’ or teachers’ personal information comply with Nigeria’s data-protection requirements and include appropriate safeguards. Nigeria’s wider AI governance efforts are also gathering momentum. UNESCO said Nigeria is among the countries that have completed its AI Readiness Assessment Methodology, designed to provide a detailed assessment of a country’s preparedness to govern and deploy artificial intelligence responsibly. The assessment has contributed to the development of Nigeria’s National AI Strategy. The approach is intended to ensure that AI development is guided by ethical principles, transparency, accountability and respect for human rights rather than being driven solely by technological advancement. In education, responsible AI could provide teachers with tools for lesson preparation, personalised learning and administrative tasks, while giving students new ways to research, practise skills and access educational resources. However, experts continue to stress that AI should remain a tool within the education system rather than a replacement for teachers. Human judgement remains essential when evaluating students, interpreting complex learning needs and ensuring that educational decisions are fair. There are also concerns about the digital divide. If access to AI-powered educational tools is concentrated among students in well-resourced schools and urban areas, technology could widen existing inequalities instead of reducing them. Nigeria’s efforts therefore increasingly centre on balancing innovation with inclusion, safety and accountability. This includes improving digital literacy among teachers and students and ensuring that educators are equipped to identify inaccurate or misleading AI-generated information. As artificial intelligence becomes more deeply integrated into classrooms and educational administration, Nigeria’s challenge will be to create an environment where technology strengthens teaching and learning while preserving critical thinking, creativity and the central role of educators. The push for responsible AI use ultimately reflects a broader objective: ensuring that Nigeria benefits from rapid technological development while protecting the rights, opportunities and educational standards of its students.
