NDLEA Destroys Seized Illicit Drugs in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA has publicly destroyed a large quantity of seized illicit drugs in Lagos, reinforcing its campaign to prevent confiscated narcotics from returning to circulation. The agency destroyed approximately 329,865.585 kilogrammes of assorted narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, with an estimated street value of ₦301.058 billion. The exercise covered seizures from concluded cases as well as abandoned consignments. According to NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Buba Marwa, about 246,864.535 kilogrammes of the destroyed substances were seized by the agency’s Lagos Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026. Another 83,001.05 kilogrammes came from seizures made by NDLEA commands operating at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Tin Can Island, Apapa, Marine and Central Intelligence and Investigation Team facilities in Lagos. The destroyed exhibits included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, ephedrine, tramadol, codeine syrup, other opioids and khat leaves.

Marwa said the destruction permanently removed the drugs from circulation and denied drug traffickers the opportunity to recover or profit from their seized consignments. The public destruction forms part of NDLEA’s broader strategy of disrupting the supply of illicit drugs through seizures, arrests, prosecutions and the disposal of confiscated substances. The latest exercise also sends a strong message to trafficking networks operating through Lagos, one of Nigeria’s major international gateways, that seized narcotics will not simply remain in storage indefinitely but can ultimately be destroyed after the necessary legal processes. Beyond enforcement, the scale of the seizure highlights the continuing challenge posed by illicit drug trafficking and the need for sustained efforts in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation alongside supply reduction.
