NDC Dismisses Defection Of Some Candidates To APC As ‘Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish’
NDC Dismisses Defection of Some Candidates to APC as ‘Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish’ The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the defection of some of its candidates to the All Progressives Congress APC as “good riddance to bad rubbish,” dismissing the departures as inconsequential to the party.
The party’s reaction followed the decision by some of its candidates to leave its platform for the ruling APC, a development that has drawn attention to shifting political allegiances ahead of future electoral contests. The NDC’s remarks suggest that the party is not particularly concerned about losing the affected candidates, presenting their departure as an opportunity to consolidate its ranks and focus on members committed to its political agenda.
According to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the APC had offered money, political appointments and other material incentives to persuade some of its candidates to defect. The APC’s alleged inducements have not been independently established.
The NDC described the affected candidates as lacking the values, principles and ideological commitment expected of its members, insisting that their departure would not derail the party’s political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party also urged its members and supporters not to be discouraged by the defections, expressing confidence in its ability to compete in the forthcoming polls. The NDC said it would conduct fresh party congresses to select replacement candidates for the constituencies affected by the defections, citing provisions of the Electoral Act 2026. However, the feasibility of replacing the affected candidates will depend on compliance with applicable electoral laws and candidate-substitution deadlines The party further accused the APC of attempting to weaken the opposition ahead of the elections, describing the defections as evidence of what it called the ruling party’s declining political fortunes. Reaffirming its commitment to its political agenda, the NDC said it remained focused on delivering good governance, improved security and economic prosperity for Nigerians. The party concluded by urging supporters to remain united, insisting that the departure of some candidates would not prevent it from pursuing its electoral objectives.
