Mexican Security Forces Kill Most-Wanted Cartel Leader; Violence Erupts Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the feared leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) long considered the country’s most-wanted drug kingpin in a high-stakes military operation in the state of Jalisco. His death has triggered a violent wave of retaliation and chaos across Mexico, forcing authorities to deploy thousands of troops to restore order. Security forces located and targeted Oseguera Cervantes, 59, during a pre-dawn operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The raid involved Mexico’s Army and National Guard, supported with U.S. intelligence, and ended with the cartel leader being fatally wounded and dying while being transported for medical care. Authorities also seized weapons and military-grade equipment, including rocket launchers, during the operation. Several of El Mencho’s top associates were killed or arrested alongside him. Mencho was widely regarded as one of the most brutal and powerful cartel bosses in recent Mexican history, overseeing a network involved in trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine and responsible for widespread violence across Mexico and into the United State
Within hours of news of his death, cartel gunmen launched coordinated reprisals across at least 20 of Mexico’s 32 states, erecting fiery roadblocks, burning vehicles and attacking security forces causing widespread public fear and disruption.
Local governments canceled schools, foreign governments issued safety warnings and residents were urged to stay indoors as parts of western Mexico including Guadalajara and tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta were enveloped in unrest.
Reported clashes between cartel gunmen and security forces have already resulted in dozens of deaths, including members of the National Guard and suspected cartel operatives, with casualties also among civilians in some areas. In response to the escalating violence, Mexican authorities have mobilized thousands of soldiers and National Guard units to troubled regions, particularly in Jalisco and surrounding states, to support local law enforcement and safeguard key infrastructure and communities.
The federal government has maintained that the operation was necessary to dismantle a criminal organisation that had grown too powerful and violent, and authorities insist that peace and security are being restored even as clashes continue.
The United States had placed a multi-million-dollar reward on El Mencho, marking him as a major target of joint anti-drug trafficking efforts between Mexico and U.S. law enforcement for years
The fallout from his death has raised concerns about possible spillover effects, including migrant flows toward the U.S. border and cross-border criminal activity, as cartel affiliates reassess leadership and territorial control. El Mencho was Mexico’s most wanted cartel boss, instrumental in drug trafficking and violent cartel operations.
