Meta to Charge ₦14 Per WhatsApp Business Message From October
Businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform will be charged about ₦14 per message sent to Nigerian numbers from October 1, 2026, as Meta introduces new per-message charges. The new pricing will affect businesses that rely on WhatsApp Business Platform to communicate with customers at scale, including banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms, retailers and e-commerce platforms. These businesses commonly use WhatsApp to provide customer support, send transaction alerts, confirm orders, issue delivery updates and promote their products and services. The charge is expected to increase communication costs for companies that send large volumes of messages to customers, particularly businesses that have made WhatsApp a major channel for customer engagement. Reports indicate that chargeable utility and service messages to Nigerian numbers will cost about $0.0101, equivalent to roughly ₦14, while marketing messages will attract a significantly higher fee of about $0.062, or approximately ₦84, depending on the exchange rate. The development is part of Meta’s broader move towards a per-message pricing structure for the WhatsApp Business Platform. However, ordinary WhatsApp users will not be affected by the change and will continue to use the messaging service without paying a per-message fee. For Nigerian businesses, the new charges could have a significant financial impact, especially for companies sending hundreds of thousands or millions of customer messages every month. Businesses using third-party Business Solution Providers may also face additional charges from those providers, meaning the overall cost could be higher than Meta’s messaging fee alone. Companies will therefore need to review their WhatsApp communication strategies and messaging volumes ahead of the October 1 implementation date.
