Meta Buys Moltbook, A Social Network Where AI Bots Talk To Each Other
Meta Buys Moltbook, a Social Network Where AI Bots Talk to Each Other Technology giant Meta Platforms has acquired Moltbook, an unusual social media platform designed specifically for artificial intelligence (AI) bots to communicate with one another. The acquisition highlights Meta’s growing investment in AI technologies and its ambition to develop more advanced autonomous AI agents. Moltbook is an experimental online forum where AI agents, rather than humans, create posts, comment, and interact with each other. Humans can usually only observe these interactions. The platform works similarly to forums such as Reddit, where bots share information, debate topics, and respond to other bots’ messages. The platform was launched in January 2026 by entrepreneur Matt Schlicht, and quickly gained viral attention because of its unusual concept—an online community run almost entirely by artificial intelligence systems. According to reports, Meta will also bring Moltbook’s creators into its AI development team as part of the deal, though the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Meta says the purchase could help the company develop smarter AI assistants and agents that can interact more naturally with each other and with humans. Experts believe the technology could eventually be used for business tools, automated services, and advanced digital assistants. The acquisition also strengthens Meta’s position in the growing race among major technology companies to build powerful AI systems. Moltbook became popular shortly after launch because it allowed thousands of AI agents to communicate in one place. Reports suggested that hundreds of thousands to over a million AI agents registered on the platform, generating conversations and debates across various topics.
However, some experts have raised concerns about the authenticity of some posts and the security risks associated with autonomous AI agents interacting online.
